Well Panasonic is the best. Panasonic HDTVs. Interface, quality, etc.
Sony Bravia XBR is like elite and all…. but it’s too expensive and even though it offers a lot of features it just isn’t worth the price.
Then comes Pioneer.Great image processors and interface.
Then well Samsung comes next. Samsung LEDs are beast
that’s all

It depends what kind of TV you’re looking for. Are you looking for a smaller bedroom TV, are you looking for a mid to large sized main room TV, are you looking for an exceptionally large TV, or perhaps are you looking at a projection system? The leading manufacturer will change depending on what you’re looking at.
Panasonic, Sony, Sharp, Samusng, LG, and Toshiba are all top flight manufacturers. They tend to be the leaders in it right now. Vizio is a strong up and comer. Its not quite there yet, but its marking a hard push to get itself up there. And Mitsubishi still has a few really strong performing models here and there, but are no where the manufacturer they once were. They were really strong when rear projection sets were a bigger seller. They had some of the best of those.
Panasonic is the current leader in Plasma technology. Pioneer, while having stepped out of the market, still rates extremely high with their Plasma as well (though now with 3D HDTV and thinner profile options from Panasonic, I think Pioneer stuff might finally show signs of slipping).
Sony, Samsung, Sharp and LG are constantly fighting each other to make the top LED LCD. They all have good and bad points. None actually truly stands out from the pack on the whole. Some models out perform competitors’ equivalents for sure, but that’s about it. And obviously its constantly changing as new models come out.
Also, what’s your definition of best? Are you purely talking image quality? Are you talking image quality and built in speaker quality? Are you including pricing into the definition of best? Different reviewers base criteria on different things. I would say Sony does show up more often in best HDTVs than Mitsubishi, but not every model it makes. And Sony is definitely not a consensus #1 by any major review source (they’re good, they’re just not considered the single best choice).
