HD camcorders- which are better, Sony or Canon?

Specifically, the camcorders in the $700- $1000 range.
I’m a little confused about the whole AVCHD thing and the pros/ cons of either brand, especially when it comes to transferring the video from the camcorder to a DVD. I do not have a blueray recorder, so I would need to get an AVCHD burner and player separately.

I would suggest the Canon VIXIA HG21 AVCHD 120 GB HDD Camcorder with 12x Optical Zoom. The Vixia HG21 is an excellent camera. good image quality. but price is over $1000
